These release notes cover the December 2000 (IPR 0012) release of Support Plus for HP-UX 11.00 running on S800/S700 systems.

NOTE: As of the September 1999 release, the name of the Diagnostic/IPR Media has been changed to Support Plus. In addition, the format has changed so that there is a separate CD-ROM for each version of the operating system (HP-UX 10.20 and HP-UX 11.0).

Overview

The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a complete set of online support tools for HP-UX systems, enabling you to verify and troubleshoot PA-RISC system hardware, and to examine system logs.

STM offers several tool types, including information tools, verifiers, exercisers, expert tools, firmware update tools, diagnostics and utilities.

Installed with STM (as of IPR 9902) are the EMS Hardware Monitors, an important tool for maintaining system availability. The EMS hardware monitors allow you to monitor the operation of a wide variety of hardware products and be alerted immediately if any failure or other unusual event occurs. Changes

The online Support Tools Manager (STM) was enhanced and updated for the current release.

Changes to User Interface and Platform

• Fixed dialogd's problem with CPU usage and /var filling up. Diaglogd now handles hold list more efficiently internally and does not create /var/stm/data/diaglogd_hold_list any more.
• Updated the diaglogd daemon to not log FIFO_FULL condition because under heavy IO error logging, diaglogd's activity log can grow extremely large and fill up the /var directory. A FIFO_FULL condition is when diaglogd sends an EMS monitor more error logs than it can handle within a short time frame.
• (JAGad03071). Fixed a possible segmentation violation from any STM UI when running the command System->Daemons->Daemon Startup. The problem apparently could occur if the user entered the command System->Daemons->Daemon Startup...->psmctd, followed by the command System->Daemons->Daemon Startup...
• (JAGad23562) Eliminated logging of informational messages as errors in the activity logs of tools that make calls to Processor Dependent Code (PDC). Previously, an error was logged if PDC returned a status that indicated that the PDC call was not supported. With this fix, an error is not logged in these cases, and a failure status value is no longer returned. Instead, a new informational status is reported that informs the user that the PDC call is not supported.
• (JAGad15192) Fixed a problem that occurs when user tries to view files in mstm, whereby mstm exited with error messages indicating internal application error and the UI Activity log contained errors indicating an internal curses library problem:

  The mvwaddstr curses library function failed when attempting to copy line
  (X) from file to widget entry pad line number (X).
  
  Possible Causes/Recommended Action:
     Internal curses library error.

General Changes to Tools

• Added support for 14X MO drive.
• For memory tools, added support for for A5191A ("Rhapsody Wave 2"): L1000/540, L2000/540.
• (JAGad29535) Enhanced tool library for the FC60 (HP Fibre Channel High Availability Disk Array Model 60/FC, "Optimus"): added UTM LUN support if it is available from the am60 command line tools.
• Modified diagnostic licensing modified to run on:
  • 540 MHz 9000/800/L1000-5x ("Rhapsody", hversion 0x5d8)
  • 540 MHz 9000/800/L2000-5x ("Rhapsody", hversion 0x5d9)
• Fixed a problem with CPU tools, whereby an error was logged if the tool "can't find HPA". On non-Superdome machines, this is an expected behavior and not an error. Therefore, errors are no longer logged for this condition.
• (JAGad24671) Fixed a problem with a CPU library, whereby the library did not return information about all CPUs on the system if it cannot retrieve data for one field for a CPU. Instead it returned with EVE_FAILED status.

Changes to Specific Tools

• Information tools:
  • Updated System Info Tool. FRU ID's are now displayed in both ASCII and hex.
  • Added Info Tool for PCI LAN.
  • (JAGad06058, JAGad21269, JAGad07176) Added support for the following CDROMs: "TEACCD-224E", "MITSUMICD-ROM FX4830T!B", and "TEACCD-532E-B CDROM."
  • Added support for Crossroads FC-to-SCSI bridge (products A4688A and A4689A). Added displaying Mode Sense page data for A4688A & A4689A.
  • CPU Info tool:
    • Added support for A5191A ("Rhapsody Wave 2"): L1000/540, L2000/540
    • (JAGad28367) Fixed problem whereby the CPU Info tool would not supply PIM information on the second CPU on L-Class computers (L1000/L2000, "Rhapsody").
  • Added support to Memory Info tool for A5191A ("Rhapsody Wave 2"): L1000/540, L2000/540
  • (JAGad29535) Enhanced Info Tool for the FC60 (HP Fibre Channel High Availability Disk Array Model 60/FC, "Optimus"). Added UTM LUN support. The UTM LUN now shows up under the LUNS section. It shows the owner and the status and the LUN number. All other fields have a dash (-) in them since they are not applicable.
  • Added support for C7369A Tape drive ("Ultrium LTO") and C7483A Tape drive ("Benchmark").
• Exerciser tools:
  • Added support for A5191A ("Rhapsody Wave 2"): L1000/540, L2000/540
  • Added support for C7369A Tape drive ("Ultrium LTO").
• Verifier tools:

• Diagnose tools:
  • (JAGad07233) The Diagnose tool for the Hyperfabric Product (A6092A) has been modified for HP-U X 11.0 to allow operation with Dart51 versions of the Hyperfabric Software (B625 7AA). After selecting the card to test and running the diagnostic the user will no longer be prompted for input. The test will run announcing success or failure . Further details will be found under the activity log for the card.
  • Added support for C7483A Tape drive ("Benchmark").
• Firmware update tools:
  • (JAGad25217) Enhanced scsi_disk firmware update tool to perform Mode-7 downloads to newer HP SCSI disk drives.
  • Added support for Crossroads FC-to-SCSI bridge (products A4688A and A4689A). Added support to read HP Library and Tape Tool firmware headers.
  • Added support for C7369A Tape drive ("Ultrium LTO") and C7483A Tape drive ("Benchmark"). Specifically:
    • Added "Ultrium 1-SCSI" and "Bnchmark DLT1" to list of supported product IDs.
    • Modified firmware update algorithms as needed to support new devices.
    • Added support for L and TT wrapped firmware files for DLT drives.
• Expert tools:
  • Updated the online help for the mstm version of the Memory Expert Tool.
  • (JAGad29427) Fixed a problem with the CPU Expert Tool, whereby the tool could not activate a CPU that it had deactivated.
  • Added support to Memory Expert tool for A5191A ("Rhapsody Wave 2"): L1000/540, L2000/540
  • Added support for C7483A Tape drive ("Benchmark").
  • Added support for the "Galactica" libraries and HPC7145-8000 ("Proton") Autochanger containing C7483A ("Benchmark") and C7369A ("Ultrium LTO") tape drives. The "Galactica" libraries include: Models A5583A, A5584A, A4680AZ, A4680AHP, A4681AHP, A5585A, A5586A, A4682AZ, A4682AHP, A4683AHP, A5587A, A5588A, A4684AZ, A4684AHP, A4685AHP, A4665A, A4666A, A4667A, A4667A, A4669A, A4670A.
  • Expert Tool for the FC60 (HP Fibre Channel High Availability Disk Array Model 60/FC, "Optimus").
    • (JAGad13926) Included new sense codes and new FRU group for the log outputs.
    • (JAGad13930) Now allows RAID 0 LUNS to be made.
    • (JAGad29528) New menu option under Logs called "View Major Event Log" created. This shows the MEL logs.
    • (JAGad29535) The UTM LUN cannot be "unbind'ed" so it does not show up in the unbind LUN list. You also cannot flash the lights of a UTM LUN since it has not drives. so it does not show up and a note was added stating why it does not show up.
• Logtool:
  • (JAGad25611) Fixed a problem with Chassis Code Decoder (dc_chassis), whereby the routine would exit with a segmentation violation while attempting to format an invalid or corrupt raw chassis code file.
  • For memory decoder, added support for for A5191A ("Rhapsody Wave 2"): L1000/540, L2000/540.
• Copyutil:
  • (JAGab73084) Updated COPYUTIL so that users cannot select more than one input or output device.

Known Problems

: Monitoring Changes for disc30, sdisk and disk array devices

As of IPR 9902 (Feb 99 release), there has been a change to the way that monitoring is done for disc30, sdisk and the HA Disk Array Models 10, 20, and 30FC.

Formerly, the "diaglogd exec" programs (pdisc30_exec, pharaymon_exec, and psdisk_exec) handled driver error entries for these devices.

As of IPR 9902, these programs have been deleted and their functionality is now provided by the EMS Hardware Monitors.

If you had customized the configuration files for the diaglogd exec programs (disk30_exec.cfg, sdisk_exec.cfg, and haraymon_exec.cfg) you may wish to re-configure the EMS Hardware Monitors to achieve the same results.

Defect Reporting

Use CHART to report defects in STM. The project name is diag.stm.tools.hpux for individual tools, and diag.stm.ui.hpux for the user interface. If you don't have access to CHART, contact an HP representative to enter a defect for you.
