Release Notes for STM on HP-UX 11.00 (June 2001)
These release notes cover the June 2001 release of Support Plus
for HP-UX 11.00 running on S800/S700 systems.
NOTE: As of the September 1999 release, the name of the
Diagnostic/IPR Media has been changed to Support Plus. In addition,
the format has changed so that there is a separate CD-ROM for each
version of the operating system (HP-UX 10.20 and HP-UX
11.0).
Overview
The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a complete set of online
support tools for HP-UX systems, enabling you to verify and
troubleshoot PA-RISC system hardware, and to examine system logs.
STM offers several tool types, including information tools,
verifiers, exercisers, expert tools, firmware update tools,
diagnostics and utilities.
Installed with STM (as of IPR 9902) are the EMS Hardware Monitors,
an important tool for maintaining system availability. The EMS
hardware monitors allow you to monitor the operation of a wide
variety of hardware products and be alerted immediately if any
failure or other unusual event occurs. For more information, see
/usr/sbin/stm/Rel_NOTES.HWE.

Changes
The online Support Tools Manager (STM) was enhanced and updated
for the current release.
Changes to User
Interface and Platform
- JAGad47639
Enhanced the performance of the xstm text map. Updates formerly
appeared as repeated, scrolling display updates to the list of
devices. For large configurations this was very slow. The updates
now appear as a single display update that is significantly
faster.
Selection in the list of devices is now performed according to
Motif behavior. A mouse click within the list selects an item while
unselecting other selected items. A mouse click with the Ctrl key
pressed results in toggling selection of the item with no impact on
selection state of other items. Multiple items are selected by a
mouse click/drag - when performed with the Ctrl key pressed, the
items are selected without impacting the selection state of other
items. Individual items may be selected by using the arrow keys to
reach the item and pressing Enter.
- JAGad50412
Enhanced the platform so that log files are saved with different
permissions. Previously, the "SaveAs" button in the STM file viewer
would create or save a log file with the permissions of rw-rw-rw
(anyone can read or writer). With this security enhancement, the
log file will be saved with permissions of rw-rw-r-- (anyone can
read, but only file owner and group can write).
- JAGad48690.
Fixed a problem, whereby on systems which use the chassis code
logging daemon (cclogd), like Superdome, N-Class, L-Class, and
A-Class, the daemon would go into an endless loop at a certain
point, and use a high percentage of the CPU.
- JAGad58488
Modified chassis code daemon (cclogd) to ignore chassis code
heartbeats on legacy PA-RISC computers. On N- and L-class machines,
the chassis code heartbeat is reflected from SAS and causing cclogd
to read them and log them to cclogd's boot log
/var/stm/logs/os/ccbootlog. Since this happens every few seconds,
cclogd is creating a large boot log and taking up wasted space not
only in disk space usage, but making the boot log difficult to
decipher chassis codes of importance.
- Modified version checking in UI and UUT to allow 10x and 11i
systems to connect to 11.20 systems. The first character of the
version on the UUT is ignored. This allows 10x and 11i systems to
connect to 11.20 systems, where the version number is B.XX.XX
instead of A.XX.XX.
Modified message displayed from UI when version mismatch is
discovered to not specify first character in UI version required.
Message displayed was:
-- Error --
This User Interface (UI) is not compatible with Unit Under Test (UUT)
magnumpi.rose.hp.com. The UI version is A.25.00. A UI with version of at
least B.26.00 is required.
Message displayed will now be:
-- Error --
This User Interface (UI) is not compatible with Unit Under Test (UUT)
magnumpi.rose.hp.com. The UI version is A.25.00. A UI with version of at
least x.26.00 is required.
- JAGad45063
NOTE (July 01): This enhancement was not completely
implemented in the June release. The complete implementation
appears in the Sept 01 release.
Enhanced diagmond so that it can be configured to only accept
connections and requests from the local system -- any requests
from a remote system will be rejected. The new configuration
parameter is in the /var/stm/config/sys/diagmond.cfg file. It is
called LOCAL_ONLY_ENABLE. If it is set to 1, only local
connections are allowed. If it is set to 0, local and remote
connections are allowed. By default, it is set to 0.
NOTE: Once the file is changed, the user must
go into the UI and run the RereadUUTConfigFile command to cause
the new values to be re-read.
If a remote connection is attempted with diagmond configured
in this manner, a message will logged in the system activity log,
as follows:
Tue Feb 27 15:31:09 2001:
System is configured only to accept requests from
the local host. Rejecting a request from a non-local
host. Message was sent from system name
(magnumpi.rose.hp.com) at IP address (15.8.134.7)
with system port number (52175).
The remote UI will behave exactly as if diagmond itself was not
running on the system to which it is trying to connect. The only
difference is that the message displayed, and logged into the UI
activity log, that will have an additional cause of the remote system
being configured to not accept remote connections. The modified message
is listed below:
An unexpected error was encountered while attempting to retrieve the
host info for hostname (XXXXX).
This could be due to either of the following conditions:
1) The support tool daemon "diagmond" may not be running on that system.
Use the STM Startup command (in the administration menu under the
file menu.)
2) The support tool daemon "diagmond" on that system may be configured
to only allow local connections. Check the value of the configuration
parameter LOCAL_ONLY_ENABLE in the /var/stm/config/sys/diagmond.cfg
file on that system.
3) The IP address for the system may be invalid or may not be associated
with a valid host. Use a valid IP address.
4) Networking may be incorrectly configured on one of the systems involved.
Verify networking by comparing 'nslookup `hostname`' with the output
of ifconfig of the LANs identified by lanscan.
More details may be available in the System Activity Log and in the
syslog on that system.
It may be necessary to access these using the Local Unit Under Test (UUT)
logs (in the administration menu under the file menu.)

Changes to
Specific Tools
- Information tools:
- Exerciser tools:
- JAGad57376
Fixed a problem with the CPU Exerciser, whereby it would stop
running, without giving any information as to why it failed.
This problem has only been reported on one machine.
- Verifier tools:
- Diagnose tools:
- JAGab43798.
Fixed a problem with the FC SCSI MUX Diagnose tool, which on
previous releases incorrectly reported an error on FC Board A
as an error on FC Board B. The fix was done on the catalog
entry which was numbered incorrectly. The problem only occurred
if FC board A failed. Devices affected: HP A3308A (FC SCSI
Multiplexer, also known as FC Bridge 4/2).
- Added support for Virtual Array 7400 ("Cronus"), which is
managed by Command View Storage Device Management (SDM,
"Pandora").
- Firmware update tools:
- JAGad47514
Fixed a problem with the Firmware Update tool for the "HP Sure
Store disk array FC60" (HPA5277A), whereby firmware could not
be downloaded to all 60 disks at one time (maximum 60 disks in
the device). The problem did not occur when download was
attempted to 59 devices.
- Added support for Virtual Array 7400 ("Cronus"). Modified
messages and online help in the Firmware Update Tool for
Command View Storage Device Management (SDM, "Pandora"),
telling how to launch the Command View SDM user interface that
provides the firmware update facility for devices managed by
SDM like the Virtual Array 7100/7400 with Autoraid.
- JAGab82738
Fixed a problem with the SES Enclosure Firmware Update Tool,
whereby it logs a message indicating that a specific product is
not supported when the actual error is that the firmware
currently installed on the device does not have "HP" in the
firmware revision.
- Expert tools:
- JAGad44397
Enhanced the Expert tool for the "HP Sure Store disk array
FC60" (HPA5277A) to display a warning if the customer tries
to bind a RAID 0 LUN:
CAUTION! RAID 0 does not provide data redundancy.
The failure of any disk within a RAID 0 LUN will
result in the loss of all data in that LUN.
RAID 0 should only be used for non-critical data
since it might be lost in the event of a hardware failure.
RAID 0 should only be used in situations where high performance
is more important than data protection.
- JAGad47158
Enhanced the Expert tool for the "HP Sure Store disk array
FC60" (HPA5277A) to provide additional text in an error message
that is displayed when all drives are being used and the user
tries to bind a LUN. The message says that there are not enough
free drives and lists the minimum required drives for each RAID
level. Information has now been added for the minimum
requirements for RAID zero.
- Added support for Virtual Array 7400 ("Cronus"). Modified
messages and online help in the Expert Tool for Command View
Storage Device Management (SDM, "Pandora"), telling how to
launch the Command View SDM user interface to configure devices
managed by SDM like the Virtual Array 7100/7400 with Autoraid.
- Modified SCSI Tape Expert Tool menu and help files so that
cstm and mstm interface menu names match.
- Fixed problem with the SCSI CD-ROM Expert Tool, whereby the
cstm dialog box contained inappropriate text (xstm and mstm are
not affected):
Select "OK" to proceed.
Select "Cancel" to cancel.
- Fixed a problem with the CPU Expert Tool, whereby 32-bit
systems would allow a de-activation of a CPU but not a
re-activation. The problem occurred on 32-bit multi-processor
systems on the following diagnostic releases: Sept 2000, Dec
2000, March 2001.
- Logtool:
- JAG53042
Fixed a problem with Logtool that occurred if diagnostics were
updated to the March 2001 release or if patches PHSS_23064-7
were installed. In these cases, the Logtool would not display
the Details section in the logtool report. In addition, the
"Details" button on the logtool dialog box in xstm
disappeared.
- Copyutil (Utilities):

CAUTION
: Monitoring Changes for disc30, sdisk and disk array devices
As of IPR 9902 (Feb 99 release), there has been a change to the
way that monitoring is done for disc30, sdisk and the HA Disk Array
Models 10, 20, and 30FC.
Formerly, the "diaglogd exec" programs (pdisc30_exec,
pharaymon_exec, and psdisk_exec) handled driver error entries for
these devices.
As of IPR 9902, these programs have been deleted and their
functionality is now provided by the EMS Hardware Monitors.
If you had customized the configuration files for the diaglogd
exec programs (disk30_exec.cfg, sdisk_exec.cfg, and
haraymon_exec.cfg) you may wish to re-configure the EMS Hardware
Monitors to achieve the same results.
