Release Notes for STM on HP-UX 11i (11.11) (March 2002)
These release notes cover the March 2002 release of Support Plus
for HP-UX 11i (11.11) running on S800/S700 systems.
Overview
The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a complete set of online
support tools for HP-UX systems, enabling you to verify and
troubleshoot PA-RISC system hardware, and to examine system logs.
STM offers several tool types, including information tools,
verifiers, exercisers, expert tools, firmware update tools,
diagnostics and utilities.
Installed with STM (as of IPR 9902) are the EMS Hardware Monitors,
an important tool for maintaining system availability. The EMS
hardware monitors allow you to monitor the operation of a wide
variety of hardware products and be alerted immediately if any
failure or other unusual event occurs. For more information, see
/usr/sbin/stm/Rel_NOTES.HWE.

Changes
The online Support Tools Manager (STM) was enhanced and updated
for the current release.
Changes to User
Interface and Platform
- JAGae01133
A workaround was created in memlogd to handle a hardware problem
with the Astro CEC hardware on HP Blade Server bh3702 "Rhapsody",
"Crescendo", and "Harmony" systems. The Astro CEC can return a bad
address for a memory error and memlogd will abort. Provided a
workaround in memlogd to handle the case when the Astro CEC can
return a bad address for a memory error. Please note that this
problem has only been seen, at this point, on the HP Blade Server
bh3702 system and since HP Blade Server bh3702 is only supported on
HP-UX 11.11, the fix will only be submitted to HWE0203 HP-UX 11.11.
- JAGae02480
Certain users are unable to connect to Version A.29.00. If a user
has an encrypted password in /etc/passwd that begins with 'x',
then diagmond will attempt to use shadow password security and
refuse the user an STM connection. When attempting to connect,
the following error message may appear:
-- Error --
Hostname (sshapd1.rose.hp.com) could not be connected due to an invalid
user login name or password.
Please Refer to the UI Activity Log for more details.
The workaround is to login as another user or change your password.
- JAGae01233
Fixed graphics "verify" diagnostic defect that could cause some
hardware configurations with FX5/10 graphics to fail with a
segmentation violation.
- Added recognition of new iscsial driver name as a SCSI
interface card. No tools or monitors are supported. Just added
mapping.
- JAGad99443
Added support for graphics device driver gvid_core.
- Modified mstm to use x-open curses, as HP-Curses is obselete on
11.20. This doesn't affect the way mstm looks and feels, or any of
the functionality, but the user may see some changes in how smooth
and fast updates to the screen occur, when pulldowns are displayed,
screens are scrolled, or the cursor is moved around on the screen.
This is due to assumptions that HP-CURSES could make about HP
terminals, which x-open curses cannot. Modified the name of a
variable used in these routines, widget_fixed_len, which is the
same as a routine name in libdiagud.sl, to widget_fixed_length. Due
to a change in the way the linker resolves parameters in 11.20, the
address of the routine name was used instead of the address of the
variable, and thus mstm would crash with SIGBUS, SIGSEGV, and
SIGILL.
- Added support for the HP Surestore Disk System 2300 and HP
Surestore Disk System 2405.
- Changed product description for igelan driver to "PCI Gigabit
Ethernet Link".
- JAGad88469
Removed logging of the following message by diagmond into the
system activity log. It is not actually an error. In some cases,
after a system reboot and until the first start of an STM UI,
diagmond would repeatedly log this error into the system activity
log and fill up the file system.
Wed Oct 10 14:50:10 2001: Cannot update system map file
(/var/stm/data/uut_status) for new
information as
there is no in memory copy of the
new information.
Possible Causes/Recommended Action:
Internal Application error.
- Added tool support for LITEONCD-ROM for SCSI Disk/Disk CD-ROM.
- There is a new product called Processor Sets (pset) from
http://software.hp.com/. This product allows processors to be
grouped and restricted to run only a given set of processes. The
CPU tools will not run correctly on machines which have this tool
installed AND one or more processors assigned to one or more
processor set(s). Therefore, the CPU tools are not supported on
machines which have pset installed. The pset support will start
with the HWE0203 release.
General
Changes to Tools
- JAGad83704
The log indicates that there are two memory extenders in L3000
system EXT1 and EXT2. The Memory Error Log Summary indicates single
bit errors have occurred on memory EXT0, because EXT1 is actually
EXT0.
Changes to
Specific Tools
- Information tools:
- JAGad96597
"Read Errors" has been changed to "Total Retries" in Info tool.
It is visible to the customer.
- JAGad91570
MEMLOGD_SUPERDOME_HEADER has been added. This change is visible
to the customer. "CAB/CELL DIMM" will be displayed instead of
"Board"
- Updated the sesencl binary to add support for the HP
Surestore Disk System 2300 and HP Surestore Disk System 2405.
Backward compatibility has been maintained. The new devices
have 15 disks: the message file and header file have been
modified to include this change.
- JAGad38520
A defect was fixed for the system info tool which was affected
only on n-class, a-class, and l-class systems. The bug was in
the cpu information portion of the system info log. It would
display information about the processor in slot 0 only and
ignore all others. The cpu map was changed to log the cpu
information in reference to their cpu number instead of their
slot number. It now will log information about all cpus on the
system.
- JAGad91570
"CAB/CELL DIMM" has been replaced by "DIMM" in memlogd.
- JAGad83704
The log indicates that there are two memory extenders in L3000
system EXT1 and EXT2. The Memory Error Log Summary indicates
single bit errors have occurred on memory EXT0, because EXT1 is
actually EXT0.
- Exerciser tools:
- JAGad88587
Prior to this release, the Processor Sets tools were not
supported in the cpu exercise tool. This release will support
Processor Sets.
- Verifier tools:
- JAGae02575
Fix for graphics "verify" diagnostic defect that could cause
some hardware configurations with FX5/10 graphics to fail with
a bus error.
- Diagnose tools:
- Firmware update tools:
- Expert tools:
- JAGae02449
The cpu.msg file version was incompatible with the updated CPU
expert tool. Changed the cpu.msg file entry A.01.03 to A.01.04.
- JAGad91541
Fixed a problem with the CPU Expert Tool, which on T600s and
K400s aborted with internal errors.
- JAGad99552
Changed the CPU Expert Tool. The software does not guarantee an
iCOD number of inactive CPUs. Instead, the HP-only user is
warned prior to the Activation operation about the dangers of
allocating a processor as it may have been deactivated due to
errors or because it is an iCOD CPU.
- The existing transformer binary, supporting
Megatron/Transformer, has been updated to support the new HP
Surestore Disk System 2300 and HP Surestore Disk System 2405.
Backward compatibility has been maintained.
- JAGae00182
There has been a fix to make the path numbers being displayed
in the log files for the cpu expert tool less cryptic.
- JAGad92076
A fix was made for SuperDome systems running the address
resolution in the memory expert tool to delete extraneous
information.
- JAGad91942
Prior to this release, the Processor Sets tools were not
supported in the cpu expert tool. This release will support
Processor Sets. Processor sets are ONLY supported in
11.11.
- Logtool:
- Utilities:
- JAGae02453, JAGae00580
JAGae02453: This release includes the new chassis codes
from PDC firmware 32.4.
JAGae00580: The installation directory and the man page
catalog for the cc_translator, ccux2hex, and cclogview tools
was changed in the September 2001 release. The new
installation path is /usr/sbin/diag/contrib/. The previous
installation directory was /usr/sbin/stm/uut/bin/progs/. The
manpage catalog is changed from 1 to 8.
- This version of the cc_translator command includes the
chassis code data for PDC firmware version 32.2.
- JAGad89310
The mca may core dump. The problem was traced to an unitialized
variable only used for debugging. The problem was fixed by
properly initializing the variable.
Known
Problems
CAUTION:
Info Tool Causes HPMCs on K- and T-Class (HP-UX 11i only)
K-Class and T-Class computers running HP-UX 11i will experience
HPMCs or Data Page Faults if you run the STM Info Tool to retrieve
configuration information from HP-PB SE SCSI adapters (JAGad88317,
JAGad97126).
The root cause is a problem in the HP-UX 11i kernel, which is
exposed when the Info Tool is run as described above. To correct the
problem and avoid potential HPMCs, load patch PHKL_25552 or its
successor. This is a kernel patch and requires a system reboot.
STM only exposes this problem if the Info Tool is run on HP-PB SE
SCSI adapters. STM does not expose the problem if the Info Tool is
run against other I/O devices.
