Release Notes for STM on HP-UX 11i (11.11) (December 2003)
These release notes cover the December 2003 release of Support Plus
for HP-UX 11i (11.11) running on S800/S700 systems.
NOTE: The HP Storageworks SDLT 160/320 GB Tape Drive and
HP Ultrium 460 External Tape Drive are NOT SUPPORTED by the
OnlineDiag product. Even though some STM tools may function with
these devices, they are still NOT SUPPORTED. The diagnostic
tools and utilities that DO SUPPORT these devices are the HP
StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (L&TT). These tools can be
downloaded, free of charge, at:

Overview
The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a complete set of online
support tools for HP-UX systems, enabling you to verify and
troubleshoot PA-RISC system hardware, and to examine system logs.
STM offers several tool types, including information tools,
verifiers, exercisers, expert tools, firmware update tools,
diagnostics and utilities.
Installed with STM (as of IPR 9902) are the EMS Hardware Monitors,
an important tool for maintaining system availability. The EMS
hardware monitors allow you to monitor the operation of a wide
variety of hardware products and be alerted immediately if any
failure or other unusual event occurs. For more information, see
/usr/sbin/stm/Rel_NOTES.HWE.

Changes
The online Support Tools Manager (STM) was enhanced and updated
for the current release.
Changes to User
Interface and Platform
- JAGae97653
1) memlogd does not delete the memlog file, when the PDT is cleared.
This problem is currently seen on rp3440s and rp4440s only.
2) The memory information tool reports only two DIMM slots, instead of
4 DIMM slots, for rp4440s and rp3440s, when the DIMMs are
loaded in quads, for the PDT entries.
In order to fix problem #1, the cs bit, which is returned in the PDT
header, needs to be copied into the data structures, so that memlogd
can clear the memlog, when it sees that the bit is set.
In order to fix problem #2, the output of
PDC_PAT_MEM->GetPhysicalAddressInfo returns all the DIMMs which are
required to be displayed for a particular physical address, and
displays this info.
- The Chassis Logging daemon (cclogd) has been disabled for the
following machines: sd16A/sd32A/sd64A, rp8420, rp7420, rp4440.
- JAGae80729
Memlogd was exiting when an SBE on the 33rd, 66th, or 99th bit was
seen on a K-class machine. This was because memlogd's syndrome versus
bit number table was incorrect. This has been resolved.
- JAGae94903
The memory diagnostics tools have been enabled for 9000/800/SD16A, 9000/800/SD32A, 9000/800/SD64A, rp7420, and
rp8420 running vPar.
- JAGae94183
The entries for the id module and the prod_op_xref were not matching;
hence there weren't any tools for the "PCI 1000Base-T LAN Adapter".
This has been fixed.
- JAGae89913
The customer was seeing the following problems:
- Cards/devices with driver fcd_vbus would show up as "unknown" on the map
- Cards/devices with driver fcd_fcp would not be identified and would show up as
"Unknown" on the map.
These problems have now been fixed.
Please do not launch this process, or kill it manually, as it could
affect the running of some tools.
- JAGae89459
Some of the PA machines (for example, rp8400, rp8420, rp7410, and
rp7420) support hot-swappable disks. These disks will not spin
automatically when the system is powered on; however, disk_em monitor
expected status information from the disks, and so generated a SERIOUS
event (Event #: 100372). This problem has now been fixed.
- JAGae85967
The STM id module now recognizes the MSA 1000 Storage device as a Disk
Array.
- The HP MSA 1000 Disk Array is now recognized on STM.
- Support for the 'ehci' driver has been added.
- JAGae86512
The incorrect entry for the raid_adapter firmware update tool has been removed from the prod_op_xref file.
- JAGae85789
The names for the A7011A and the A7012A cards were being displayed
incorrectly on the map. This has been corrected.
- Support has been pre-enabled for c8000 SPUs.
- The memory tools have been enhanced to support 3000 PDT entries for the rp4440 and rp3440 machines.
- The memory tools are now supported on the following new platforms:
sd16A/sd32A/sd64A, rp8420, rp7420, rp4440, and rp3440.
- Support has been added for the following SPUs:
- rp4440
- rp3440
- rp8420
- rp7420
- sd16A/sd32A/sd64A
General
Changes to Tools
Changes to
Specific Tools
- Information tools:
- JAGae94093
The systems Info tool has been enhanced to report cabinet fans and
power supplies on Pluto MAKO systems.
- JAGae93440
Added support for the "HP DVD-ROM 304" device in the disk
information tool (srm_disk).
- JAGae90399
Code changes have been made to ensure that the CPU information
logs output correctly.
- The system information tool takes at least 3 minutes to
finish, on the first time it gathers sensor information from the
IPMI firmware on IPMI systems. The user is informed of this in the
information log, so that he is aware that he will need to wait for
completion.
- Code changes have been made in the CPU information tool to
support c8000.
- JAGae90817
The memory information tool was failing, when it was invoked
simultaneously for all instances of memory on large system
configurations. This problem has now been fixed.
- JAGae91172
The DIMM slot mapping for the memory information tool was incorrect
for rp3440: this problem has now been fixed.
- The TEAC-CDV-28E-A (A8069A) Optical Workstation device is now
supported.
- The system information tool has been enhanced to display CPU
FRU information.
- The System Info tool has been enabled to support the KIOX
cabinet on rp8420.
- JAGae86509
Fixed a problem which kept the HP A7143A RAID160 SA SCSI Adapter info tool from providing the correct information about its catalog,
when the STM info command was run.
- JAGae81256
The info/pci tool has been enhanced to run on sd16A/sd32A/sd64A, rp8420, and
rp7420 machines. Also, the info/pci tool will now run on vPar
machines.
- Support has been added for A8070A (TEACDW-224E-A).
- JAGae82985
Messages were modified in the catalog file to indicate that the
physical address reported by the memory error logging daemon can
differ from the PDT entry on V-2500 and V-2600 classes of machines.
This is due to the fact that the memory error logging daemon logs
a 64-bit address, but the PDT uses a 40-bit address.
- JAGae88076
System Info tool was reporting incorrect fan and power supply
failures, after KIOX was enabled. This has been fixed.
- CPU tools now support the following new SPUs:
- sd16A/sd32A/sd64A
- rp8420
- rp7420
- rp4440
- rp3440
- The system info tool has been enabled on Mako systems.
- Exerciser tools:
- JAGae92398
The memory exerciser periodically showed up as being hung, when it
was run, but then recovered on its own. This problem has now been
fixed.
- JAGae89936
Fixed a problem so that the CPU exerciser will not go into the
HANG state, when the CPU and Memory Exercisers run together on a
very large, heavily loaded (Superdome) machines.
- JAGae84155
When the LAN exerciser was run on the system, it used to hang.
This problem was not very common on all systems, since the rate of inflow of ICMP packets must be constant, and must be at least once in 2 seconds. If it is not, then the problem will not be
reproduced.
In order to fix this problem, when the exerciser is in
FINISHED_STATE or SHUTTING _DOWN_STATE, we check to see whether the number of responses received is greater than, or equal to, the
number of messages sent. If yes, the exerciser returns from the
function. If no, the exerciser waits for 60 seconds (in the case of FINISHED_STATE; 30 seconds for SHUTTING_DOWN_STATE), and then
returns from the function. This fix introduces a 90-second delay in
the worst case (i.e., when the responses are less than 90%, and
there is a constant inflow of ICMP packets at the rate of at least
one ICMP packet in 2 seconds).
- Verifier tools:
- JAGae54317; JAGae50414
The PC Floppy Disk verifier tool (disk) was logging an irrelevant
message with missing parameters, whenever there was no medium
(floppy) in the drive, and the user selected the option to disable user queries. This problem has now been fixed.
- Diagnose tools:
- Firmware update tools:
- Expert tools:
- JAGae94511
Code changes have been made to the CPU expert tool to avoid
having the cstm user interface entering into SIGSEGV, when
operations like "mark for reconfiguration", "assign a PID", and
"Run exerciser" are made to run.
- JAGae90286
A defect in "Selftest - Level 1" for the DLT STM expert tool has
been fixed.
- Logtool:
- Utilities:
Known
Problems
CAUTION:
Info Tool Causes HPMCs on K- and T-Class (HP-UX 11i only)
K-Class and T-Class computers running HP-UX 11i will experience
HPMCs or Data Page Faults if you run the STM Info Tool to retrieve
configuration information from HP-PB SE SCSI adapters (JAGad88317,
JAGad97126).
The root cause is a problem in the HP-UX 11i kernel, which is
exposed when the Info Tool is run as described above. To correct the
problem and avoid potential HPMCs, load patch PHKL_25552 or its
successor. This is a kernel patch and requires a system reboot.
STM only exposes this problem if the Info Tool is run on HP-PB SE
SCSI adapters. STM does not expose the problem if the Info Tool is
run against other I/O devices.
