This release notes discuss the HP-UX 11.23 (March 2006) release of the Support Tools Manager (STM).
The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a set of online support tools for the HP-UX system, enabling you to verify and troubleshoot system hardware, and to examine system logs.
STM offers several tool types, including Information tools, Verifiers, Exercisers, Expert tools, Firmware Update tools, Diagnostics and Utilities.
The following subsections describe the changes made to STM for the current release:
Enhancements
Following lists the enhancements made to Online Diagnostics:
- JAGaf83770
The diaglogd module sends a notification to the syslog and the daemon activity log when var/tombstones contains less than the threshold disk space of 500 MB.- JAGaf88138
The Memory Protection Tests, which were included in the PA machines, are now ported to the IPF machines. The Memory Protection Tests are run along with the Memory Information Tool. The results of the memory protection test are stored in the Information Activity Log for Memory Device.- JAGaf83941
The monconfig module starts and terminates individual monitors. The following options are included in the main menu:
- Terminate selected monitor
- Bring up terminated monitor
- JAGaf86545
For security reasons, the EMS framework restricts text logging to a particular directory path on the system. The modified monconfig module verifies whether the same directory path is provided in the user input while defining the path for logging.- The following cards are enabled:
- AD278A PCI 8 port serial MUX adapter
- AD279A PCI 64 port serial MUX adapter
Defect Fixes
The following information applies to both Itanium Processor Family (IPF) and PA-RISC systems:
- The diagnostic daemon, diaglogd, archives MCA errors in the /var/tombstones directory. However, if adequate space is not available in the var/tombstone directory, diaglogd fails to archive MCA errors. As a solution, the diaglogd daemon sends an alert notification to the user through syslog if the space available is less than 500MB. This alert notification is also logged in the daemon activity log. On receiving alert notifications from the diaglogd daemon, the user must clean the filesystem to have adequate space and to prevent loss of MCA error logs.
- JAGaf83656
The description, cause, and action information for the event number 1316 is modified to reflect the correct information.- JAGaf84864
The CPU exerciser tool fails when run on a multi-core IPF machine in the vpar environment. This issue is fixed.
Before running the STM CPU Exerciser tool on a PA 8900 machine, the value of the kernel parameter, shmmax, should be changed from the default value of 64 Mb (0X4000000) to 128 Mb (0X8000000) using System Administration Manager (SAM).
If the SysFaultMgmt product is installed on your system, you must take the following steps, before and after updating the OnlineDiag product:
/sbin/init.d/cimserver stop
/sbin/init.d/cimserver start
NOTE: Should you need to kill monitoring during normal system operation, you must use steps 1 and 3, above, to avoid an automatic restart of monitoring; step 2 is the action you need to perform while monitoring is turned off.
Future updates to SysFaultMgmt and OnlineDiag will resolve this problem.
Symptoms: The Memory Page Deallocation (MPD), which runs on most current HP-UX computer systems, does not work on the RX 4610 computer. The activity log for memlogd displays the following message: "unsupported device."
Cause/Action: MPD cannot be implemented on RX 4610, because of the design of that system. The memlogd daemon cannot run on it.
Symptoms: In xstm, no online help appears when you enter a command for online help. The diagnostics themselves are still functional.
Cause/Action: Online help for xstm requires that the Netscape browser be installed on the computer. The xstm interface invokes the Netscape browser to display HTML files located in the diagnostics sub-directories on disk. (The mstm and cstm interfaces does not use the Netscape browser.)
The easiest way to install the Netscape browser is from the AR (Application Release) Media supplied with the computer.
Alternatively, you can view the online help for xstm, mstm, and cstm on the Internet.
