Release Notes for STM on HP-UX 11.23 (September 2004)
These release notes cover the HP-UX 11.23 (September 2004) release
of the Support Tools (diagnostics).
Overview
The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a set of online support
tools for HP-UX 11.23 systems, enabling you to verify and
troubleshoot system hardware, and to examine system logs.
STM offers several tool types, including information tools,
verifiers, exercisers, expert tools, firmware update tools,
diagnostics and utilities.
Documentation
For the latest and most complete information on STM refer to the
Diagnostics section of Hewlett-Packard's online
documentation Web site at:

Changes
The online Support Tools Manager (STM) was enhanced and updated
for the current release.
Special
For the HP-UX 11i V2.0 (March 2004) Release, two patches were included
in the HWEnable11i bundle on the OE CDs that are required for hp mx2
dual processor module systems:
- PHKL_30165 (diag2)
- PHKL_30155 (machdep)
The HWEnable11i patch bundle MUST be installed on all hp mx2 dual
processor module systems; failure to do so will result in system
instability. Both of these patches in the HWEnable11i patch bundle
are kernel patches, and will require you to reboot your system.
Changes to User
Interface and Platform
The following changes are common to both HP Integrity Servers, Intel ®
Itanium ® based workstations (IA systems), and to HP 9000 Servers, RISC
architecture-based workstations (PA systems):
The following applies to IA systems only:
- JAGaf15082
MCA error logs placed at \var\tombstone showed the current time stamp
in the file name, without regard for actual MCA time.
It would have caused difficultiesfor the user, if the file names used
the time from the system time, because this did not help correlate a
log saved at EFI with one saved online, and thus, could have led to
confusion about whether or not there were multiple MCAs. This has now
been fixed.
- The diagnostics process which creates fru sdr data files has
been renamed from "ipmid" to "diagipmid".
The following applies to PA systems only:
- JAGaf24485
Memlogd on cell-based machines was not necessarily monitoring all the
cells. Thus, errors reported on memory belonging to those cells would
not be reported. This has been fixed now.
- JAGaf23339; JAGaf23176
On cell-based machines, mt_memlogd was not using the correct thread
APIs. With the introduction of mxn threads, the return value of the
API was different than what was being returned before. Hence, pthread
calls in memlogd were failing. This has been fixed.
- JAGaf23343
Errors in mt_memlogd, caused by changes due to PA-CLM, have been fixed.
- The memory error logging daemon has been enhanced to handle
PA-Cell Local Memory. Upon changes in the CLM configuration, the
memory error logging daemon will drop all memory errors logged in the
memlog file. A new configuration file will be associated with
memlogd (/var/stm/data/memory_config).
- JAGaf17889
The data field of data type, physical location, contains source,
source detail, and levels[0-7]. The data in the level is deciphered
from the combination of source and source detail. In some cases, the
level data would be reserved, and would result in the display of '!'
in the event log file. Modifications have been
made so that '!' is not displayed in such scenarios.
- JAGaf18838
When a single bit error was encountered, memlogd aborted due to
unsatisfied symbols. This has now been fixed.
- Licensing has been enabled on rp3410, rp3440, rp4410, rp4440,
rp7420, rp8420, and sd16A/sd32A/sd64A cell-based machines for 11.23.
- JAGae36443
Memlogd was terminating because the Astro Chip was sometimes unable to
convert an address to its physical location. This has been fixed now.
- Online memory diagnostics have been enabled on rp4440 platforms
for 11.23.
- The diagnostics process which creates fru sdr data files has
been renamed from "ipmid" to "diagipmid".
- JAGaf02165
The event description now decodes the Reporting Entity ID of the
encoded chassis code, and provides the Cabinet, Cell, and CPU
information associated with it.
- Licensing has been enabled on rp4440 platforms for 11.23.
- JAGae42546
Mt_memlogd sometimes showed a status of "deallocated", even when the
page was "marked for deallocation". This has been fixed now.
General
Changes to Tools
The following changes are common to both HP Integrity Servers, Intel ®
Itanium ® based workstations (IA systems), and to HP 9000 Servers, RISC
architecture-based workstations (PA systems):
- JAGaf23872
The tools were exiting with a "Failure", when the LAN verifier and
exerciser modules were run on a network interface, which was part of
an aggregation. This has now been fixed. The activity log now
indicates that the tool does not run on an autoport aggregation.
Changes to
Specific Tools
- Information tools:
- JAGaf22640
System Information Tool was not installed. It is now supported on rx2620.
The following changes are common to both HP Integrity Servers, Intel ®
Itanium ® based workstations (IA systems), and to HP 9000 Servers, RISC
architecture-based workstations (PA systems):
- JAGaf08181
The new tape device (SDLT600) is not supported by STM, but by LTT.
- JAGaf12279
Fixed the following problem:
the infoinfo command, run the on ql_adapter info tool, was
displaying an incorrect 'description'(only) of the fields that the tool would display when run.
- On 11iv2, the PCI information tool will be not be delivered. The PCI information tool is a part of the STM diagnostic suite,
and is used on PCI cards to report PCI configuration space
information. The following are the workarounds for the various
cards:
- For A3739B, A6847A, A6825A, A5230A, A5506B, A5513A, A5783A,
A5838A, A7011A, A7012A, A9782A, A9784A, AB286A, AB345A, A6794A,
and AB352A LAN cards (or the LAN portion of the Combo Cards), the
"lanadmin" command can be used to obtain the product ID
information.
- For the Hyperfabric cards (A6386A), the command
"ioscan -kf | grep clic" can be used to obtain the required
information.
- For A6795A, A6826A, A9782A, and A9784A Fibre Channel Cards
(or the FC portion of the combo card), the "fcmsutil" command can
be used to obtain the PCI information.
The following applies to PA systems only:
- JAGae95263
The display of CPU information has been corrected on multicore
systems.
- JAGaf14613
Code changes were made to handle failures of a firmware call on
L3000/L1500 machine calls.
- JAGaf14613
Code changes were made so that the CPU Information tool would not
run (abort), if the selected processor was in Inactive state, or
if the Processor was not in the current partition in the vPar
environment.
- JAGaf06854
Code changes were made:
- To pre-enable the rp4440 platform;
- To display the CPU speed correctly on the rp3440 platform.
- Exerciser tools:
The following changes are common to both HP Integrity Servers, Intel ®
Itanium ® based workstations (IA systems), and to HP 9000 Servers, RISC
architecture-based workstations (PA systems):
- JAGaf21600
The LAN exerciser has been enhanced to disallow any operations on
auto port aggregated links.
- JAGaf16953, JAGae98745
Error handling for disk exerciser has been enhanced. Different error conditions are handled now.
The following applies to IA systems only:
- JAGaf16703
The memory exerciser could potentially be reported as "Hung" in
the STM map, when being run on large IPF memory configuration
systems, even though the memory exerciser was indeed running.
The memory exerciser has been updated to include additional calls
during its memory test, to report progress to the diagmond daemon,
ensuring that diagmond knows that the memory exerciser is still
alive and running, so that diagmond will not think -- and report --
that the memory exerciser is "Hung" in the STM map.
The following applies to PA systems only:
- JAGaf09580
Code changes were made to clean all the temperary files under
/var/tmp, when the CPU exerciser is made to run on inactive CPUs.
- Verifier tools:
The following changes are common to both HP Integrity Servers, Intel ®
Itanium ® based workstations (IA systems), and to HP 9000 Servers, RISC
architecture-based workstations (PA systems):
- The Lan verifier tool has been enhanced to identify an
aggregated link, and report this to the user. The tool does not
allow verification on aggregated links.
The following applies to PA systems only:
- The clstorage verify tool will no longer be supported as of
the 11.23 release. This verify tool was supported on some Legacy
SCSI interfaces.
- Diagnose tools:
The following changes are common to both HP Integrity Servers, Intel ®
Itanium ® based workstations (IA systems), and to HP 9000 Servers, RISC
architecture-based workstations (PA systems):
- JAGaf18175
The atm diagnose tool is now available on 11.23.
- Firmware update tools:
- Expert tools:
The following applies to IA systems only:
- JAGaf19067
With rp4440 dual-core processor modules, deconfiguration occurs
for both processors simultaneously, when one is marked. However,
the firmware differentiates between the processor specifically
marked for deconfiguration, and its companion, and only allows
the "marked" processor to be "unmarked" (marked for
reconfiguration). This change to the CPU expert tool only allows
the eligible cpu to be shown in the display for reconfiguration.
- JAGaf05397; JAGaf05740; JAGaf06212; JAGaf07688
The CPU display in the Expert tool is now paged, instead of
scrolled.
The following applies to PA systems only:
- JAGaf21150
Code changes were made so that CPU #1 on PA8800 Processors would
not be deconfigured, since selecting CPU #1 would lead to
deconfiguration of the Monarch Processor.
- The behavior of the CPU Expert tool has been changed to
enable ease of use. The CPU Expert tool used to write the CPU Display information to the scrolling text window.
The impact of this was that the user would not be able to read display information for all CPUs, if there were more CPUs on
the machine. Now the CPU Display function writes CPU Display
information to an interactive file viewer. This enables the
user to scroll and read all CPUs' information. This viewer
can be closed any time while scrolling.
CSTM script users will be impacted by this change.
The following is a simple example of the cstm script:
-------------
Select -all
Select Dev 6
ExpertTool
Activate Cancel
Display
Exit OK
--------------
Now, the user has to modify the script by adding a "Done"
command after the "Display" and "ExpertTool" commands (by
default the Expert tool will issue the display command):
------------------
Select -all
Select Dev 6
ExpertTool
Done
Activate Cancel
Display
Done
Exit OK
------------------
- JAGae48303
Memory errors found by the expert tool on cellular machines were
not always getting logged in the memlog. This is fixed now.

Known
Problems
If the SysFaultMgmt product is installed on your system,
you must take the following steps, before and after
updating the OnlineDiag product:
- Shut down the SysFaultMgmt subsystem via the command
line:
/sbin/init.d/cimserver stop
- Perform the OnlineDiag update.
- After the update is completed, restart the SysFaultMgmt
subsystem via the command line:
/sbin/init.d/cimserver start
NOTE:Should you need to kill monitoring during
normal system operation, you must use steps 1 and 3,
above, to avoid an automatic restart of monitoring;
step 2 is the action you need to perform while
monitoring is turned off.
Future updates to SysFaultMgmt and OnlineDiag will
resolve this problem.
Problem: Memory Page Deallocation (MPD) is not available on
the RX 4610.
Symptoms: The Memory Page Deallocation (MPD), which runs on most
current HP-UX computer systems, does not work on the RX 4610
computer. If you look in the activity log for memlogd, you will see a
message saying, "unsupported device."
Cause/Action: MPD cannot be implemented on RX 4610, because of the
design of that system. The memlogd daemon cannot run on it.
Problem: Online help may not work for xstm
diagnostics.
Symptoms: In xstm (the graphical interface for online
diagnostics), no online help appears when you enter a command for
online help. The diagnostics themselves are still functional.
Cause/Action: Online help for xstm requires that the Netscape
browser be installed on the computer. The xstm interface invokes the
Netscape browser to display .htm files located in the diagnostics
sub-directories on disk. (The mstm and cstm interfaces do not use the
Netscape browser.)
The easiest way to install the Netscape browser is from the AR
(Application Release) Media supplied with the computer.
Alternative: Using any computer, you can view online help for
xstm, mstm, and cstm on the Internet at:
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/diag/stm/sth_summ.htm
Defect
Reporting
Use CHART to report defects in STM. The project name is
diag.stm.tools.hpux for individual tools, and diag.stm.ui.hpux for
the user interface. If you don't have access to CHART, contact an HP
representative to enter a defect for you.
Online Help
Online help has changed for HP-UX 11i V2.0. On previous operating
systems, STM used the HP-Help system to display help information.
With HP-UX 11i V2.0, help information is provided via Web pages.
The xstm platform will open a browser on the workstation and
display help from files on the local disk. The same files are also
available over the Web.
The mstm and cstm platform will display ASCII text for several
help topics. For complete online help, consult the Web pages at the
URLs located below:
Complete online help for xstm, mstm and cstm is available on the
Web at:
