As a licensee of HP VSE Management Software, you can download support software for the HP-UX 11i managed systems in your VSE configuration from the HP VSE Managed Node Software Update website. That site provides depots containing the latest updates of the following software:

  • VSE agents, WBEM providers, and other support software required on HP-UX 11i managed systems

  • HP-UX 11i patches required on a managed system for correct operation of the software

  • The vseassist diagnostic utility, which identifies configuration issues on the CMS and managed systems and recommends solutions for them.

IMPORTANT: The HP VSE Managed Node Software Update website does not yet include updated agents for VSE Management Software version 4.0. Until this site is updated with the latest agent depots, you can only download agents for the previous release of the software.

Download the Depots

Use the following procedure to download updates from the HP VSE Managed Node Software Update website.

Procedure 1 Select and Download Depots

  1. Visit the HP VSE Managed Node Software Update website at http://vsemgmt.external.hp.com.

  2. Provide your contact information so that HP can inform you in the event of a problem, defect, or issue regarding the software that you download. HP is committed to protecting your privacy, and the information that you provide is not used for any other purpose. For more information, click the Privacy statement link at the bottom of any HP web page.

  3. Select one of the available software packages.

  4. Click the terms and conditions link to review the license terms and warranty statement that apply to the software.

  5. Indicate your agreement to the license terms and warranty statement by clicking I Accept.

  6. If you selected the VSE agent depot, you are presented with the following additional choices:

    Include OpenSSH in the depot?

OpenSSH is required on VSE managed systems. HP recommends selecting Yes to this option, which includes the latest supported version of OpenSSH in the depot.

If you do not want to upgrade the version of OpenSSH on your managed systems, or if you use a different vendor's version of SSH, you can select No, and OpenSSH is not included in the depot. Your installed version of OpenSSH is not overwritten when you install the depot.

IMPORTANT: If you choose not to include OpenSSH in the depot, you must install and configure some version of SSH on the managed systems yourself.
Version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to be installed on managed nodes

VSE Management Software version 4.0 requires JRE version 1.5 on managed systems. For version 3.x of the VSE Management Software, HP recommends installing JRE version 1.4.2.

Version of Integrity Virtual Machines, if any, installed on any managed nodes

If HP Integrity Virtual Machines is installed on your managed systems, select the version of the software that is installed. This option ensures that the correct version of the VM Provider is included in the depot. Otherwise, select None.

If you select None, the depot that you download will include version A.01.20 of the VM Provider. It does no harm to install the VM Provider on a system that does not have HP Integrity VM installed. If only some of your managed systems use virtual machines, select the appropriate version to be included with the depot. You can use this depot for managed systems with that version of HP VM installed, and for managed systems without HP VM.

Click Next to proceed to the final download screen.

  7. The final download screen shows a summary of your depot selection choices. If you selected the VSE agent depot, you can view the depot contents and installation instructions by clicking the link next to the Download button. For the other depots, the contents and installation instructions are displayed on this screen.

  8. Click Download to begin the download using your browser's “Save to Disk” dialog.

Install the Software

After you download the depot file, you can install the software on your managed systems by using one of the following procedures:

Procedure 2 Install HP-UX Managed System Software from the CMS

Prerequisite.  OpenSSH must be installed on the managed systems and configured for use by HP SIM. For details about configuring OpenSSH for HP SIM, see the VSE Management Software Version 4.0 Installation and Update Guide for HP-UX.

  1. Copy the downloaded depot file (vseagent_version-code.depot) to the CMS, replacing the existing /var/opt/vse/depot/vseagent.depot file.

  2. Select your HP-UX managed systems and choose Configure->Configure VSE Agents->Install HP-UX VSE Agents... from the HP SIM menu bar. Click Run Now to start the installation. A table of available HP-UX agent software is displayed, with default selections already applied.

  3. You can accept the defaults or modify the selections. Not all products need to be installed on all systems. For example, it is not necessary to install the Virtual Machines Provider except on VM Host servers and virtual machines. However, there is no harm in installing the agents and providers on managed systems that do not require them. To select or deselect all software choices, click the check box in the table header. To select or deselect a specific component, click the check box next to that component.

IMPORTANT: Some of the products available for selection require the managed system to be rebooted after installation. This is indicated in the Requires Reboot? column. If you select a product that requires a reboot, the managed system will automatically be rebooted when the software installation completes. The default selections do not include any software that requires a reboot.

  4. When you have selected the software that you want to install, click OK. The selected software will be installed on each of the managed systems that were previously selected. HP SIM displays the progress and results of the installation in the Task Results screen. Review the output for error messages before continuing.

If any of the selected software requires a reboot after installation, the managed system is rebooted automatically.

  5. Select the systems that you want to manage with gWLM, and choose Configure->Configure VSE Agents->Start gWLM Agent... from the HP SIM menu bar to start the gWLM agent on the selected systems.

  6. Run the HP SIM discovery process again. This will allow HP SIM to retrieve additional information about the systems where agent software has been installed. Choose Options->Identify Systems... from the HP SIM menu bar, then click Run Now.

Procedure 3 Install HP-UX 11i Patch Depot

  1. Copy the downloaded depot file (vseagent_patches.depot) to the managed system, or to a depot distribution directory accessible from your managed system.

  2. Execute the following command on the managed system:

IMPORTANT: This command reboots the system after installation.

    # swinstall -x auto_reboot=true -s full_depot_path \*

Procedure 4 Install vseassist Depot

  1. Copy the downloaded depot file (vseassist.depot) to the CMS, or to a depot distribution directory accessible from your CMS.

  2. Execute the following command on the CMS:

    # swinstall -s full_depot_path \*

Normally, you do not have to install vseassist on managed systems. You execute from the command line on the CMS, and from there it uses mxexec to run remotely on managed systems. However, if communication problems between the CMS and a managed system prevent mxexec from working, you can install vseassist.depot on the managed system and run it there.

For complete instructions on using vseassist, see vseassist(1M), which is included in the depot.
