The Instant Capacity (iCAP) Manager is a web-based interface that you can use to monitor your Instant Capacity environment. Several pages are available, including a homepage to provide an overview of the available Instant Capacity resources, a Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP) group manager page to provide more insight into the group managers, a GiCAP group page providing information about GiCAP groups, and information pages for iCAP complexes and hosts.

What is Instant Capacity?

HP's Instant Capacity (iCAP) software product provides the ability to increase or decrease processing capacity instantly on specified HP enterprise servers. Instant Capacity is a part of the HP Utility Pricing Solutions (UPS) program and was formerly known as iCOD.

With Instant Capacity, you initially purchase a specified number of active system components (cores, cell boards, and memory) and a specified number of inactive (iCAP) components without usage rights. Prior to activation of an inactive component, additional usage rights must be obtained by purchasing a component-specific Right to Use (RTU) codeword from HP. When the codeword is applied to the system, the component usage rights are increased on the system, and an inactive component can be instantly activated. For example, inactive cores can be activated to increase the active processing capacity on the system. The action can be taken without waiting for new hardware to arrive because the Instant Capacity cores are already plugged into the system.

Terms to Know When Using Instant Capacity

Here are some terms to know when using Instant Capacity:

  • codeword

The mechanism used with Instant Capacity software to adjust available usage rights for system components (RTU codewords), apply an amount of temporary capacity to a system (TiCAP codewords), and to apply Sharing Rights to a GiCAP system to enable the creation of one or more groups (GiCAP codewords). Codewords are purchased from HP and retrieved from the Utility Pricing Solutions web portal.

  • Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP)

Global Instant Capacity, or GiCAP, provides HP customers with the flexibility to move usage rights (RTUs) for Instant Capacity components within a group of servers, and it also provides “pooled” temporary capacity across the group. This provides more cost-effective high availability, more adaptable load balancing, and more efficient and easier use of temporary capacity.

  • Right to Use (RTU)

A type of codeword used to activate and adjust available usage rights for Instant Capacity components (memory, cell board, or core). Application of an RTU codeword adjusts the number of component-specific usage rights on the system.

  • Temporary Capacity (TiCAP)

Or Temporary Instant Capacity, an HP product that enables customers to purchase prepaid core activation usage rights, for a specified (temporary) period of time. Temporary capacity is sold in 30 processing-day increments. Temporary capacity is also referred to as “TiCAP”.

Instant Capacity Components

Instant Capacity consists of the following main elements:

  • Instant Capacity system hardware (including cells, cores, and memory)

  • Instant Capacity software

  • Utility Pricing Solutions portal (http://www.hp.com/go/icap/portal)

  • Instant Capacity Administration System

  • Instant Capacity database

  • Other system management commands
